Keep in Pantry/Fridge

“Spice Up Your Life”

In the summer, it’s easy to plant a few fresh herbs (basil, parsley, thyme, sage) in a pot or anywhere in the ground.  I ask Mia to go out and pick me whatever I need – she loves it!  But in the winter, I just don’t splurge as often on fresh herbs so I rely on dried or herb blends in the tube (found in fridge section of grocery store).  Although, my Uncle Dennis recently taught me a great trick for keeping parsley fresh for over 2 months!
*   Cut stems a bit and place fresh parsley in a plastic cup of water (a few inches filled) and cover the top with a small grocery bag.
      That’s it – fresh Parsley!

Speaking of spices, if you haven’t been to Penzeys spices in Chestnut Hill, it is really worth the trip (they have a website too:  I get a huge bag of taco seasoning and it’s good for at least 4-5 dinners and I can pronounce all the ingredients.  Other winners at Penzey’s are:  cinnamon, lemon oil, fine herb blend, shallot salt are all terrific!

If you keep the following on hand in your pantry or fridge at all times, you are ready for anything (even the next snowstorm, god forbid)!

  • Box of organic chicken broth
  • Progresso Italian Bread Crumbs
  • Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO) –  (Costco)
  • Bottle of fresh lemon juice
  • Penzey’s Spices:  Salt, Pepper, Rosemary, Thyme, Herbs de Provence, Onion/Shallot powder and Taco Seasoning
  • Herb Tubes (in fridge section of grocery store):  Parsley, Basil, Garlic (also keep these dried)
  • Box of Pasta and Rice
  • Taco shells
  • Frozen Vegetables (Fresh Market):  Corn, Stringbeans, Peas
  • Bag of shredded cheese (mozzarella and/or Mexican blend) – lasts forever unopened
  • Frozen Meat:  Bag of frozen shrimp, chicken breasts in Ziplock, ground turkey
